Dedicated to the well-being and education of children
As founder and administrator Jerry Stone says, "At Stepping With The Stones children come first!" This understanding permeates all aspects of our preschool. Jerry and Bette Stone have devoted their lives to the care, development and well-being of children. Their experience and expertise are a large part of the success of Stepping With The Stones preschool, a truly unique and powerful early childhood education program that enriches the lives of both children and parents.
Award-winning educators Jerry and Bette Stone are the founders, and administrator and head teacher, respectively, at Stepping With The Stones. The husband-wife team has taught extensively in the local area: Jerry, as a public school teacher for 31 years, 17 in the service of Camden-Rockport Middle School; and Bette, as a teacher's assistant for more that a dozen years at the Children's House Montessori School in Rockport. Jerry is also an ordained minister for over 30 years. He has pastored 3 churches, presently pastoring in Ellsworth, Maine. In addition, Jerry and Bette have led area day camps, church organizations, youth groups, and resident camps. During the summer months they operate one of mid-coast Maine's most popular camps, Stepping With The Stones Summer Day Camp. They are joined at Stepping With The Stones by a dedicated and caring staff, including 2 daughters of the Stones.
"I first found out about the SWTS preschool through a recommendation made by my husband’s employer. I’d never heard of it or the Stone family but decided to call their phone number and talk to Jerry myself and stop by for a tour. The two biggest selling points for me were made clear immediately when I saw how much fun the kids were having and the excellent working relationships among the staff. Being a family-run organization just was so “cool” in my opinion, and it was so obvious how much each member “loved” kids. I would strongly recommend SWTS to other parents because it really prepares your 3, 4, or 5-year old for a kindergarten setting and gives them the basic foundations to put him/her a little bit ahead of the game academically when he/she starts kindergarten."
